"Titan Rising" is episode twenty-first of the Teen Titans series and the eighth episode of Season 2.

Terra is back, having mastered her powers while she's been away she says she is now ready to become a Teen Titan. The others still aren't so sure she is ready after what happened the last time they saw her, they decide to let her prove herself and not a moment to soon. Slade is back and his new worm like robots are causing earthquakes around the city, the Titans go to investigate the happenings underground and during the mission Terra and Raven must learn to work together if they want to stop Slade and save Titans Tower.

Raven is not excited about Terra´s return.

The episode starts with the Teen Titans playing volleyball on the roof of Titans Tower, with the exception of Raven as she would much rather meditate. But the serve from Beast Boy seems to always find her. At first, she gives it back, but second time, she just moves aside, and lets the ball fall down. As Beast Boy was about to retrieve the ball, somebody had thrown it back up. And that somebody revealed to be Terra. The Titans are very happy about her return - especially Beast Boy and Starfire - but Raven is suspicious about her sudden return. Terra says she wants to stay with the Titans - this time for real, and she improvises a little demonstration to prove she has learned to control her powers.

Suddenly an earthquake shakes the city, and it turns out that it is not Terra's fault; something is moving under the ground. It is a giant mechanic worm, Slade's new toy. When Terra follows the other Titans out to deal with it, she bumps into Raven, who has a few flashes of memories, one of which is Slade. The heroes try to destroy the worm but it seems to be too tough. Besides, Raven and Terra still consider each other rivals, and this causes conflicts as cannot work together on the mission. The worm made its escape underground, with the Titans giving chase.

Raven's rivalry with Terra

The Titans find themselves in a large cavern and encounter the worm, which had detached itself into three parts, with each part heading a different way. The Titans also split up; Starfire, Beast Boy and Cyborg go after the worm burrowing towards the surface, but they are shocked when they find out that the target of the worms is Titans Tower. The worms begin to fire huge lasers that starts to cut a circle around the Tower, about to sink it underground.

Meanwhile as Terra, Raven and Robin tunnel their way towards the control center where Slade controls his robot. Robin attempted to shut the worm down, but Slade appears and stops him, bringing the two into a duel once more. Raven attempts to continue from where Robin had left off, but Terra insists that smashing the computer is the best idea. However, Raven stops her, telling her since they do not know how the computer works, it might actually make the situation worse. Another tug-o-war starts between Raven and Terra, as Raven tries to stop Terra from smashing the computer with a rock. Terra demands why Raven wouldn't trust her and Raven tells her that trust is something she has to earn. Terra finally lets go but a rock plummets from the ceiling and smashes the computer anyways and the worms begins accelerating, which Terra finally admits that "smashing the computer was a bad idea".

Raven and Terra attempt to salvage the Tower

Back at the tower Starfire and the others manage to destroy the worm on the surface, but there was another set of worms from underground that was still drilling through. The ground started to sink, and the group leaves in hopelessness. While Raven feels the same, Terra thought otherwise, deciding to push the ground up to try save the Tower. Raven and Terra finally put aside their differences and together they push the tower to its original position with their powers and fix everything in it. Robin manages to escape from Slade and return to the Tower, where he finds everything already finished.

Terra in her room holding a communicator.

Both Raven and Terra make up with one another, with the former leading Terra to her new room. Terra receives her Titans Communicator, gains Raven's trust, and becomes a Teen Titan. When she was by herself, Terra could not believe that the Titans actually trust her. Her hair falls to cover one side of her face, foreshadowing something else.

Main Characters

Supporting Characters

The title refers to the Titans rising as a team, specifically Terra, who has to prove her place as a Titan to Raven and Robin. It is also similar to the Rainbow album, "Rising", which is often referred to as "Rainbow Rising", due to the song "Stargazer" mentioning the aforementioned line.

  • Like in the comics, Raven is not sure it is safe to have Terra around.
  • Unlike many instances, Beast Boy was able to speak while in animal form (turning into a gorilla and calls for Terra as he chased towards her).

Cultural references

  • Some of the music used in this episode is recycled from the Justice League episode "In Blackest Night".

  • As the Titans wave their arms in panic losing the volleyball, Starfire's right armband is missing. In the next shot, it matches the color of her hair, before appearing back again.
  • As Terra enters her room, her goggles went missing.
  • After Beast Boy says "This is the best thing that's ever happened to me", his protruding tooth is missing.
