Silkie is one of the several thousand mutant moth larvae created by Killer Moth. The Teen Titans, especially Beast Boy and Starfire took him in as a pet after defeating Killer Moth.

Origin

Silkie was labeled by Killer Moth as Larva-M3-19. His first appearance is in Date With Destiny. Silkie and his mutant brethren were bred as giant moths intended to threaten the safety of Jump City. After the defeat of Killer Moth, all mutant moths reverted into larvae. After Killer Moth's giant moths returned to their maggot forms, Beast Boy was able to grab one. He named the maggot Silky. Little did he know the baby maggot had the appetite of a whale! This was in the episode "Can I Keep Him?" He chewed up everything, even the couch and the lounge room. When the Titans went to investigate, Beast Boy grew cautious. He then asked Starfire to help him hide Silky from the others. At first Starfire had hesitation over the fact that drool sprung from the littler maggot's mouth. But after a few thoughts of caring for a baby and watching him grow in time excited Starfire and the mother instincts in her grew. From then on, she cuddled Silky and called him her little “Bumgorf.”

Starfire cuddling SilkyShe cared for Silky like a child. It was not until he screamed for food was Starfire in big trouble. When she tried to get him to eat certain foods, he refused it. But when he ate some Tamaranian food (Zorka Berries) that is when Starfire kept on feeding him more and more of it. The strange thing was, Silky never became full and in time, he grew bigger and bigger in size. It was now harder for Starfire to keep him a hidden in her room. When she left for one minute, she returned to find that Silky had eaten a hole in her wall and escaped.

Later that night, during Cyborg's search for the creature eating the tower, he stumbles upon Silky. The giant maggot then eats his foot. After a battle between Silky and the Titans, Starfire saves her giant pet. In the end, she is convinced by the others that Silky had to go. Upset, Starfire took the giant Silky to a deserted island to leave him there. When Silky pleaded her to stay, Starfire had no other choice to blast him with a small plasma blast. This made Silky distrust Starfire and the other Titans.

Upset, it seemed he just wanted to stay alone on the island until he died. Just then, Killer Moth returned and Silky returned as a giant moth.

Meanwhile, a battle between Johnny Rancid and his giant, tan-like dog, Rexilla and the Titans had just begun. Suddenly, the giant moth, Silky, showed up and devoured the mechanical pooch...along with Johnny at the end of the leash. Silky might have been acting out only of anger and fear. After all, Killer Moth was controlling him by whipping him on his back. Silky battled the Titans and did not hold back any hesitation. When Robin was caught in Silky’s gooey spit, he nearly plummeted to his death until Beast Boy caught him. Knowing that it was the wrong choice to leave Silky alone, Starfire claimed that it was her responsibility to save Silky -- not only from doing wrong but saving him from an eternal life of sorrow under Killer Moth’s control.

When Starfire got close enough, she started to call Silky's name. In defense Killer Moth called back his original name: LarvaM319. Through this; Silky flashbacked comparisons of how Killer Moth and Starfire treated him -- with Starfire’s gentleness and Killer Moth’s abusive behavior. But when he remembered Starfire blasting him and then Killer Moth attacking him on the island; Silky could not pick which one to go to. The stress-level became too much for Silky's body to handle and he ended up exploding. He was then nothing but a skeleton and a pile of purple slop. But out of this, Cyborg got his leg back and Johnny Rancid was freed. But Silky was still dead in the eyes of Starfire.

But then hope brightened up when Starfire heard the cries of her pet. When she found Silky (returned as a little maggot) under the purple slop, she hugged him. The only explanation for why Silky survived was of what Beast Boy said in the episode, "He was not mutating... He was just malting." Robin promised Starfire that Silky could stay as long as she did not give him anymore alien foods. Starfire was then stumped of what to feed her little larva now until she saw Silky starting to eat his purple remains. When Starfire tasted it tasted exactly like Zorka berries! Silky and Starfire happily ate the remains as the other Titans, with a little twitching of their eyes, watched.

Later in the series, Silky became less seen. He sprung up in a few scenes and was taken care of by Titans East when Robin’s crew was away. In basic terms, Silky became the new Teen Titans mascot while still remaining as Starfire's little Bumgorf.

In Moth form, Silky represents and parodies the monster Mothra, a kaiju from the Godzilla series.

Secret Pet

Silkie was featured in Can I Keep Him?, where Beast Boy revealed to have kept him as a pet. However Silkie can be seen in quick flash by cameos in episodes before Can I Keep Him?, such as X, Betrothed and Haunted. Silkie can be seen in the first few seconds of each episode.

In Can I Keep Him? Silkie ate several furniture and sabotaged the Titans' Tower when the Titans were fighting Johnny Rancid's mechanical dog, Wrex. Starfire agreed to take care of Silkie under secret of Beast Boy, and Starfire fed him zorkaberries which he liked when he denied all Earth food. Then, he grew really large and attacked the Titans, eating Cyborg's leg getting the attention.

Abandonment

Then, Starfire was forced by Robin to get rid of Silkie, and he was taken to an island with a note on a rock that said "Please Be Kind To Monster". But when Silkie realized that Starfire will abandon him, he grabbed her leg, and Starfire, unable to see in terror, blasted a starbolt to free her leg. When she finally left, Silkie was extremely sad and started crying until he heard Killer Moth laughing evily. When the Teen Titans found Johnny Rancid again, with a repaired monster called Wrexzilla, Silkie showed up a giant monster and ate Wrexzilla with Johnny Rancid attached. Killer Moth rode Silkie and the two attacked the Teen Titans, except Starfire.

The Titans Pet

Then, when Killer Moth fell off of Silkie, Starfire immediately called out to Silkie, "No Silkie! He is evil! You belong with your own norgor!", and his other evil creator, Killer Moth, urged him, "Come to papa", and Starfire and Killer Moth were arguing to Silkie to stay with them, for Starfire's side, he shall have a beautiful life and have lots of fun while growing, but Killer Moth's side was that he created him in the labratory, and urged him to be evil and join his father in a dark side (referencing Star Wars' Darth Vader), and Silkie quickly exploded. However, it is revealed that he molted off the monster skin he wore, and it turns out Johnny Rancid survived being eaten by Silkie.

Soon, Silkie started eating the zorkaberries that he already digested, and Starfire also did the same thing. The others got disgusted and walked away. Robin then told Starfire, "Alright, he can stay", and confirmed Silkie the official pet of the Titans.

Silkie's first appearance as a pet was in The Quest where he was dressed up like Robin and was nibbling a pizza slice. His next appearance was Mother Mae Eye (episode) where he was touching the pie Mother Mae Eye was trapped in and wanted to eat it but didn't. He also appears in Episode 257-494 where Starfire was taking him for a walk inside and was later sleeping in his own basket.

Silkie also appeared in The End part 1 at the Jump City Pizza Parlor, and flew in the air when Starfire slammed on the table. Silkie's first Season 5 appearance is For Real, where Control Freak searched for the Titans in the Tower, and Silkie kept cuddling him in Starfire's room. Also, Control Freak used Silkie like a sonic cannon when he was imitating Cyborg. Then, Mas y Menos found Silkie until Bumblebee blamed Silkie for causing mess and noise in the tower. (Bad Silkie!)

He also appears in The Lost Episode where he dove into Starfire's zorkaberries pot. He is also one of the two only recurring characters other than the Titans who appear in Teen Titans: Trouble In Tokyo where he was sleeping, and was left in Robin's room until the Titans would return from Tokyo.

His biggest Teen Titans Go! issue role is Issue #37, Winterlude, where he gets hold of Mumbo's hat and Mumbo has other tricks without it.

Food Preference

His favorite food is pizza and zorkaberries.
